Your next chapter
You built a business, sold one, retired comfortably…or maybe all three.
Then came the unexpected. Achievement created a vacuum.
You’ve been left with deeper questions. What’s worth doing? How do I give back? Is golf enough? Am I dong what really matters?
Many people spin their wheels at this point. Others act prematurely because they feel compelled to “DO something…or anything!”
Joyful Stewardship inquiry
This is a moment to regain clarity, adapt…and perhaps let go. Your life energy has a unique value at this stage. What does it mean to you to “make the most of your next chapter?”
Is your relationship stuck?
It’s easy to avoid that sinking feeling. You focus on the kids, work, hobbies, house projects. You play the happy couple at family events. No relationship is great ALL the time, right?
But where’s that special connection? Why does being together make you so stressed out? Who knew ambivalence could be painful?
Wealth can be a deterrent to facing broken relationships. It creates the illusion things are OK. Conflict feels terrifying because the material consequences are so high.
Joyful Stewardship inquiry
You are at a crossroads and time is passing. Is life happening to you or through you? Are you ready for a frank, courageous look at what you want to do about your relationship?
Finding your way in wealth
Wealth provides access to endless stimulating experiences. It can feel like an eternal game of whack-a-mole, filled with activity…but…what’s it adding up to?
The opposite of wheel spinning is purpose. In Japan, it’s called ikigai, “a reason for being, a reason for living.”
Joyful Stewardship inquiry
Some say purpose is “where your deep longing meets the world’s great need.” Others say “following your bliss” leads to purpose. Others believe the purpose of life is to “find your gift and give it away.”
What do YOU believe? What are you called to be and do with your life?
Friendvestments
Investing in a friend’s business is complex relational territory. I call these friendvestments.
On the one hand, friendvestments are a great opportunity to collaborate and leverage the trust of your friendship for mutual benefit. You may be able to share insights about an investor’s perspective that would otherwise be difficult for your friend to access. You could be a helpful conduit to other investors. If your friend is not wealthy, your support would help advance they and their family’s material wellbeing.
However, business can be unpredictable and investing requires a cool, objective distance. These qualities can erode a friendship. Both parties must have the willingness and capacity to maintain clear, frequent communication while setting boundaries between business and personal matters.
The potential for straining the friendship is high. What happens if the business struggles? How will you approach additional funding requests if the business expands?
You may personally lose interest in the venture. Your friend is investing their hopes and dreams into making it happen. What
impact does it have if when your mental, emotional, and/or financial attention goes elsewhere?
What does that signal to your friend?
Friendvestments require emotional and relational high-touch, quite unlike other investments. Much more is at stake than money.
How can you honor the value of your friendship as you consider investing in a friend’s business?

The walking ATM machine
Some people see hIgh net worth individuals as a walking ATM machine. Consciously or not, their intentions are transactional. They want something from the relationship.
Family, friends, and even strangers may fixate on getting financial support or help with career advancement. Nonprofit leaders seek rapport in hopes of getting a grant. Politicians want campaign contributions. Some people simply want to “name drop” that
they know you. Others see you as a benevolent authority figure who can magically solve their problems.
All the attention can be overwhelming. It can be disheartening to long for authenticity and mutuality.
The “walking ATM machine” phenomenon also raises weighty questions. Who can I really trust? Does anyone value me for who I am and for the skills I have…or just the money and influence? Would anyone want to be with me if I didn’t have wealth? How do I know if someone is offering me genuine friendship?
Joyful Stewardship inquiry
There is a way through social pressures filled with ease, integrity, and insight. Finding it is an process of inquiry, such as: “What can I do to not become cynical? How can I bring open, genuine, loving connection into my life?”
